Coaches Conduct Policy
At Mass Admirals, coaches play a crucial role in shaping not only the athletic development of our players but also their character and love for the game. Our program is committed to maintaining the highest standards of conduct, professionalism, and sportsmanship. All coaches are expected to adhere to the following code of conduct to foster a safe, positive, and developmentally appropriate environment for our athletes.
1. Commitment to Player Development
- Prioritize skill development, sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth over winning at all costs.
- Provide age-appropriate coaching methods that align with USA Hockey’s development model.
- Create a structured, engaging, and supportive learning environment that promotes both individual and team success.
2. Respect & Professionalism
- Treat all players, parents, officials, and fellow coaches with respect and professionalism at all times.
- Foster a positive team culture by demonstrating patience, encouragement, and fairness.
- Refrain from the use of profanity, inappropriate language, or demeaning remarks in any situation.
- Address conflicts calmly and professionally, working toward constructive resolutions.
3. Safe & Supportive Environment
- Follow all Mass Admirals policies, including SafeSport, emotional abuse prevention, and locker room policies.
- Never engage in any form of physical, verbal, or emotional abuse.
- Ensure that all players feel included, supported, and valued as members of the team.
- Monitor player interactions and intervene if any bullying, harassment, or inappropriate behavior occurs.
- Promote an environment free of hazing, intimidation, and excessive pressure.
4. Appropriate Coaching & Communication
- Use positive reinforcement and constructive criticism to guide player development.
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with players and parents regarding expectations, team goals, and schedules.
- Avoid excessive yelling or aggressive coaching tactics that do not serve a constructive purpose.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries with players, including in-person interactions, over phone calls, texts, and social media.
5. Player Safety & Injury Prevention
- Ensure players warm up, cool down, and train properly to minimize the risk of injury.
- Recognize signs of injury, including concussions, and follow appropriate protocols for medical evaluation and return to play.
- Never encourage or pressure players to play through injuries or discomfort.
- Prioritize player safety over competitive success.
6. Compliance & Accountability
- Follow all Mass Admirals, USA Hockey, and league rules, including those regarding game conduct, officiating, and discipline.
- Lead by example in demonstrating sportsmanship, integrity, and respect for the game.
- Accept responsibility for personal actions and decisions.
- Be open to feedback and willing to adapt coaching methods as needed.
- Understand that failure to adhere to this policy may result in disciplinary action, including suspension or removal from coaching responsibilities.
